In The Food Revolution, Gangster Gardener Ron Finley examines the systemic racism inherent to food scarcity, and why it is important to reclaim our communities and green spaces. Urban environments can promote unhealthy lifestyles that are known to increase the risk of chronic diseases. Many people in urban areas have less access to fresh vegetables, and are forced to travel or spend more money just to eat better. People sometimes will take quickest route to a meal, and choose fast food. The problem is that in urban areas there are way too many bad food options at every turn. You almost start to think that these types of meals can be eaten everyday, instead of once or twice a week.

Community gardens offer a place to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, which may help more sustainable food systems to develop. These gardens can increase social bonds and networks among neighbors and the people who participate in farming. Gardening can change everything, even bring people closer together, because they share more than just a street name…..they own something together. These connections help reduce crime, empower residents and allow residents to feel safe in their neighborhoods. Social ties are important to the wellbeing of people in a community since they can bring positive health effects. Exposure to nature and green spaces is known to have a beneficial effect on health and well-being through its impact on physical activity, social contacts, stress and air quality.

On Master Class, Ron Finely has a course you can take. It teaches people how to garden anywhere, even on the street. I took his course and, I was blown away at how little I knew about gardening. In my mind I made it so complicated, but it’s not that hard to do. Ron Finley used an old boot as a flower pot haha, if he can grow food in that, its something we all can do. For the future I feel that this skill will be more and more needed as nation-wide shutdowns happen, and people have less access to the food they need. This is a God given gift to all of us, why not use it? If you grow your own food, the less you will be impacted by the world’s changes.
