Ethan Hawke stars as abolitionist John Brown in this series based on the novel “The Good Lord Bird” by James McBride. His character rides through the south looking for slaves to free, and slave owners to slaughter. The odd thing about John Brown is his strong love for God and the Bible, which is very hypocritical judging by the way he lives lol. John and his sons along with Native Americans and freed slaves go from town to town declaring war on all slave owners, putting fear in everyone in their path. He meets a young black man who’s father is killed during a shoot out. John and this young man escape, John later names him “Onion”.
The show is shot from Onion’s perspective. He fears John, but learns to love him over time as a father figure. From the very beginning John treats Onion like the rest of his children, like an equal human being. The show is made to make you laugh, even though it’s written about the worst time in American history. The show was entertaining, funny at times, and it made me realize that not all Europeans were for enslaving Africans. Some were disgusted by it, and even helped Slaves reach freedom by risking their own lives. This is not your typical slaves story, I enjoyed….I hope you will too.
I give this show 4 out of 5 stars
