Hurricane Ida was not the worst storm, but it still caused a lot of damage for many folks in Louisiana. The entire electric grid was destroyed so even after the storm had passed, many people had hardships due to the heat, and loss of food. No electricity means no street lights, no cool air, no comfort sometimes for weeks. Security is another big issue here in New Orleans, and electricity helps keep the streets a bit safer. When the lights are out, thats when the criminals come out. The garbage diggers, the killers, the thieves, and the druggies. There were also those who needed refrigerators to keep their medicine and insulin cool. People gathered together to assist their neighbors, and supported each other. There were neighborhood foods banks, charging stations, some people would even drive and pick up gas for others. The love for people in need is a beautiful characteristic of this city, it’s really amazing to see and experience this.
Now everyone knows that this is a tropical city, so we have a few items on a check list to have every hurricane season. Gas is hard to get, so people were already smart about filling up their tanks early. Most people filled up their tubs with water, stocked up on canned food, and bottle water for a few weeks. Flash lights, candles, and dog/cat food were a must have. Not all areas of New Orleans has floods, and sometimes you get one or the other. Sometimes no power, or sometimes you’re surrounded by water and garbage for days.
When I say garbage, I mean GARBAGE!!! Weeks before the storm hit, the waste management department of the city went on strike lol. I know, this is crazy. I understand why the workers stood up for themselves. Across the entire country the job of a garbage man has change due to Covid-19, and the dangers in how they handle trash has grown. They demanded more money, something they deserve. The Garbage company in charge of New Orleans trash has not agreed to any of their demands, so many of the city’s trash is just sitting, and rotting on the streets. Some people blame the mayor, but I feel it’s mostly out of her control. All the Mayor can do is get a new Garbage company, but it’s not that simple.
With almost 4 weeks after the storm, things are slowly picking back up. In the videos attached I drove through some major parts of the French Quarter and Canal street just to give you a view of how we’re doing. Some street lights are down, and you will see some tree branches on the ground, but the city is back. I think it’s even safe for tourism to kick back in, so book your tickets. You can still have some fun down here on vacation.
