TECH | How to Start a Podcast | What to do and what not to do.

Starting a podcast can be a fun and rewarding way to share your voice and ideas with the world. Here are some steps to get you started:

Choose a topic

Choose a topic that you are passionate about and that you think will interest your audience. From my own experience, I would choose a topic that has a wide range of sub topics within it. Don’t pick something that doesn’t give you room to expand into other things. I had a few podcasts over the years, and I wanted to change topics, but I was locked into the main topic of the show. Pick something that encompasses everything that interests you, things you love. An easy way to avoid being locked into a topic is by naming the show after yourself. This way, people are tuning into you and your personality, and not just a subject.

Plan your format

Decide on the format of your podcast, such as interview-style, solo, co-hosted, or storytelling. Be unique, be original and stay away from copying other shows. You can adopt certain things, but never duplicate someone’s vibe. Be yourself, because over time people will tune in because they love you not because you sound like somebody else. Learn from other shows, and use that knowledge to create your own style.

Choose your equipment

You will need a good quality microphone, headphones, and recording software to record your podcast. Use what you have, but make the best of it. Try to record in a space without noise or distractions. You can change the quality of your sound with noise filters, having enough space between your lips and the mic, removing furniture that makes noise, and monitoring the mic levels while recording.

Create your podcast artwork

Create artwork that reflects your podcast’s topic and style. Don’t beat yourself up about the first logo lol It takes time to get it right. Hey, I am still questioning the logo we created for this site. These sites can help you, you can pay as low as $5 to get someone to create it for you if you’re not creative.

Record and edit your episodes

Record your episodes, edit them for sound quality, and add music or other elements to enhance the listening experience. On my first podcast I used GarageBand to record. It’s free, and you also have it on your iPhone/iPad. Something I learned from doing so many shows is to create a template that includes the intro music, the outro, separate tracks for your interview, and another track for sound effects and extras. Trust me, this saves you so much time. It makes it easy to do shows, and you won’t feel overwhelmed because most of the work is half done.

Host and distribute your podcast

Choose a hosting service to store your podcast files and distribute them to podcast platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts…etc.
