The Bible warns that Satan, also known as the devil, is a deceiver who seeks to use our emotions against us in order to lead us away from God and into sin. Here are some examples of ways evil can pull us away:
Pride: Satan can use our pride to make us think we don’t need God or that we are better than others. Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Fear: Satan can use fear to paralyze us and prevent us from trusting in God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Anger: Satan can use anger to lead us into sin and cause us to harm others. James 1:19-20 instructs us, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
Jealousy: Satan can use jealousy to make us covet what others have and to turn us against them. Proverbs 14:30 warns, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”
Lust: Satan can use lust to lead us into sexual sin and to destroy our relationships. 1 Corinthians 6:18 warns, “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body”. In todays society we are taught that sex is no big deal, but every partner you have is spiritually linked to you. Those few moments of passion, can lead to a lifetime of spiritual damage.
Overall, the Bible warns us to be aware of Satan’s schemes and to guard our hearts and minds against his attacks. It also encourages us to seek God’s help and to rely on His strength and wisdom to resist temptation and overcome sin. Just think about all of those moments in your life where you feel upset, sad, angry or insecure. Satan uses emotions to lead you into a negative or sinful reaction. Always be mindful of Jesus, and remember that his sacrifice for us was bigger than anything we could ever deal with. No matter what you go through, just know that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit as a comforter to help us with life. Don’t give in to sin, and put on your spiritual armor daily.
