Paterson, NJ – Mayor André Sayegh revealed the newly constructed Hinchliffe Stadium on May 19th, during a ceremony that also acknowledged its recognition as a National Historic Landmark. Esteemed figures like Whoopi Goldberg and Sen. Corey Booker delivered speeches, emphasizing the significance of Hinchliffe Stadium and its remarkable history. As one of the few remaining Negro leagues ballparks, Hinchliffe has stood abandoned since 1997 but remains a symbol of cherished memories tied to legendary players such as Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Martín Dihigo, Monte Irvin, and Larry Doby.
After an extensive redevelopment project costing over $100 million, Hinchliffe Stadium has undergone a remarkable transformation. The site now boasts a versatile athletic facility supporting multiple sports, a preschool, a restaurant and event space, ample parking, affordable senior housing, and a museum dedicated to commemorating the stadium’s illustrious past from the 1930s to the 1980s. The anticipation is on high as professional baseball games are set to make a triumphant return to the venue this weekend.
