If you need a cool place to visit, this is the place to go. Eastern State Penitentiary is a former prison located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It was built in 1829 and operated until 1971. At the time of its construction, Eastern State Penitentiary was the largest and most expensive public structure ever built in the United States.
The prison was designed to hold inmates in solitary confinement, with the goal of using isolation to reform them. Inmates were kept in small, individual cells that were designed to prevent communication between prisoners. They were allowed out of their cells for only one hour per day, during which time they could exercise alone in a small courtyard. The prison was intended to be a model of rehabilitation, but over time, it became notorious for its harsh conditions and abuse of prisoners.
Eastern State Penitentiary was also notable for its unique architecture, which was based on the Quaker concept of penitence. The prison was designed to look like a Gothic castle, with high walls and guard towers. The cells were arranged in a radial pattern around a central hub, which was topped by a glass skylight that symbolized the “Eye of God” watching over the inmates.
Today, Eastern State Penitentiary is a National Historic Landmark and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can take guided tours of the prison and learn about its history and architecture. The prison is also home to an art installation called “Voices of Eastern State,” which features recorded interviews with former inmates and correctional officers. This place is spooky and cold.
